What Does the Kazakh Coat of Arms Mean?
The Kazakh national emblem features a Shanyrak at its centre – the circular opening at the top of a yurt through which light enters. The Shanyrak is the deepest symbol of Kazakh identity: it represents home, family and the cosmic centre. The curved rays radiating from the Shanyrak symbolise sunbeams and the horns of steppe horses (Tündük). Two winged mythical horses (Tulpar) flank the emblem, referencing the nomadic equestrian tradition. The flag of Kazakhstan shows a golden eagle beneath a golden sun on a sky-blue field, with an ornamental band along the hoist. The sky blue represents the eternal sky (Tengri) in Turkic tradition, the sun with its 32 rays stands for abundance and prosperity, and the steppe eagle for freedom and strength. Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world (2.72 million square kilometres) and has a rich nomadic history: the Saka, Scythians and Turkic khanates shaped the region over millennia. The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan (14th century) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kazakh Jewellery: Nomad Gold, Silver and Steppe Art
Kazakhstan has a unique jewellery tradition deeply rooted in the nomadic culture of the Eurasian steppe. The Golden Man of Issyk (Altyn Adam) – a warrior suit covered in over 4,000 gold pieces dating from the 4th or 3rd century BC – is the country's most famous archaeological find and a national symbol. The Saka and Scythian nomads were masters of animal-style ornament: goldwork depicting deer, snow leopards and horses ranks among the most impressive gold finds in Central Asia. In traditional Kazakh jewellery, silver dominates: wide bangles (Bilezik), ring sets, forehead chains and breast pendants set with turquoise, carnelian and coral have been part of women's dress for centuries. At Kazakh weddings, jewellery plays a central role: the bride wears the Saukele – a tall, conical headdress richly adorned with gemstones, pearls and gold embroidery. In the diaspora, jewellery with Kazakh motifs serves a special purpose: the Shanyrak or the coat of arms around the neck makes belonging visible.

Kazakhstan Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?
Gold carries deep meaning in Kazakh culture – from the Golden Man of Issyk to Saka animal-style ornament to the gold jewellery presented at weddings. The gold version of our Kazakhstan necklace honours that tradition: the 18K gold plating on brass provides a warm, rich glow that highlights the coat of arms. The silver version offers a cooler, more modern look – and echoes the Kazakh silver jewellery tradition of the steppe. Alongside the necklaces, we also offer the Kazakhstan phone case with the map design for all popular smartphone models.
When Is Nauryz and What Is Celebrated?
Nauryz (the Kazakh spelling of Nowruz) is celebrated every year on 22 March – it is the Kazakh New Year and marks the beginning of spring. In Kazakhstan, Nauryz is the most important cultural festival of the year and is celebrated over several days with music, horse games, wrestling and traditional food. The central dish is Nauryz Kozhe – a soup made from seven ingredients symbolising prosperity and happiness. Nauryz connects Kazakhstan with the wider Turkic and Persian cultural world – from Azerbaijan and Kurdistan to Iran and Afghanistan. In 2009, UNESCO recognised Nowruz as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How Many Kazakhs Live Abroad?
The Kazakh diaspora has a unique characteristic: a significant proportion consists of Russlanddeutsche (ethnic Germans from Russia) and their descendants, who were deported to Kazakhstan during the Soviet era and resettled to Germany from the 1990s onwards. An estimated 1 to 1.5 million people with ties to Kazakhstan now live in Germany – as Russlanddeutsche, ethnic Kazakhs or Russian-speaking Kazakhstanis. This makes Germany home to the largest Kazakhstan-connected community in Europe. In Russia, approximately 600,000 ethnic Kazakhs reside, primarily in the border regions of Orenburg and Omsk. Turkey hosts a Kazakh community of around 30,000. Kazakhstan itself has roughly 19.5 million inhabitants and is a multi-ethnic country with over 100 nationalities. A Kazakhstan necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
