What Does the Hungarian Coat of Arms Mean?
The Hungarian national emblem features a divided shield topped by the Holy Crown of Hungary (Crown of St. Stephen). On the left side, eight silver and red bars represent the rivers and hills of the country and are attributed to the Árpád dynasty, Hungary's founding royal house. On the right side, a golden patriarchal cross rises from three green hills – a symbol of the Christian faith and the three mountain ranges Tátra, Fátra and Mátra. The Holy Crown is the centrepiece of the emblem and one of the most significant royal insignia in Europe: King Stephen I (c. 975–1038) received it from the Pope, founding the Kingdom of Hungary in the year 1000 AD. The crown is still kept in the Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest today. The colours of the Hungarian flag – red, white and green – stand for strength, loyalty and hope. The Turul bird – a mythical falcon from the founding legend of the Magyars – is another central symbol of Hungarian identity.
Hungarian Jewellery: Goldsmithing, Herend and Steppe Art
Hungary has a jewellery tradition shaped by the nomadic steppe culture of the Magyars, Byzantine influences and Central European goldsmithing. The Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin (896 AD) brought steppe nomad artistry to Europe: golden belt plates, strap fittings and earrings from this era rank among the most significant finds in Hungarian archaeology. In the 19th century, Budapest developed into a centre of goldsmithing and jewellery craft – the Great Market Hall and the Castle District were home to renowned goldsmiths. The Herend Porcelain Manufactory (founded 1826) also enjoys worldwide renown and supplied porcelain to the Habsburgs, Queen Victoria and other European courts. At Hungarian weddings, jewellery plays an important role: gold chains and rings are given as signs of family bond. In the diaspora, jewellery with Hungarian motifs serves a special purpose: the coat of arms around the neck makes belonging visible.

Hungarian Necklace in Silver or Gold – Which One Suits You?
Gold carries deep meaning in Hungarian culture – from the golden grave goods of the conquest era to the Holy Crown of St. Stephen to the gold jewellery at weddings. The gold versions of our Hungarian necklaces honour that tradition: the 18K gold plating gives the coat of arms a warm, rich glow. The silver versions provide a cooler, more modern look. For the complete set, we offer the Hungary men's bundle and the Hungary women's bundle – each with necklace and bracelet at a reduced price. We also have the Hungarian crest keychain in zinc alloy with the coat of arms motif (9 cm).
Buying a Hungarian Necklace – What to Look For
If you're looking to buy a Hungarian necklace, pay attention to three things: material, craftsmanship and chain length. You can choose between stainless steel (more durable, scratch-resistant – V2 necklace, flag necklace, men's bracelet) and brass with 18K gold plating (warmer gold tone – crest necklaces and women's bracelet). For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the Holy Crown, patriarchal cross and bars should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. For chain length: men's 60 cm, women's 40 cm + 5 cm. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.
How Many Hungarians Live Abroad?
The Hungarian diaspora is estimated at 2.5 to 3 million people worldwide – compared to a home population of roughly 9.6 million. In the United States, approximately 1.4 million Hungarian Americans form the largest Hungarian community outside Europe. Cleveland, Ohio has the highest concentration and is often called the capital of the Hungarian diaspora in America. Vibrant communities also thrive in New York, New Jersey and Chicago. Romania is home to roughly 1.2 million ethnic Hungarians – the largest Hungarian minority in Europe, settled primarily in Transylvania for over 1,000 years. Slovakia hosts around 450,000 and Serbia's Vojvodina region approximately 250,000. In Germany, an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 Hungarian nationals reside. Austria also has a significant Hungarian community, reflecting centuries of shared Habsburg history. A Hungarian necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
