Whether you grew up in Prague, Brno, Munich or Vienna: d'origine connects you to your heritage. At d'origine, people from more than 40 countries show where they come from.
What Does the Czech Coat of Arms Mean?
The Czech national emblem features a silver double-tailed lion on a red field – one of the oldest heraldic animals in Europe. The lion has accompanied Bohemian history since the 12th century and traces back to the Přemyslid dynasty, which ruled Bohemia for over 400 years. The double tail distinguishes the Bohemian lion from every other heraldic lion in Europe, making it truly unique. The full coat of arms unites the emblems of the historic lands: Bohemia (silver lion on red), Moravia (red-and-silver chequered eagle on blue), Silesia (black eagle on gold) and Bohemia again in the fourth quarter. The colours of the Czech flag – white, red and blue – reference pan-Slavic colours and were introduced in 1920 with the founding of Czechoslovakia. The Czech Republic lies at the heart of Europe and looks back on a rich history: in the 14th century under Emperor Charles IV, Prague was the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) is the largest enclosed castle complex in the world and has been the seat of Bohemian rulers for over 1,000 years.
Czech Jewellery: Bohemian Garnet, Crystal and Centuries of Craft
The Czech Republic has a jewellery tradition that is unparalleled worldwide. At its centre is the Bohemian Garnet (Pyrope) – a deep red gemstone mined in the mountain ranges of Bohemia since the Middle Ages, making the country world-famous. Bohemian garnet jewellery was coveted across Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries and worn at royal courts from Vienna to St. Petersburg. Bohemian crystal art also enjoys global renown: since the 14th century, glass and crystal of extraordinary clarity have been produced in Bohemia – brands like Moser and Bohemia Crystal stand for the highest craftsmanship to this day. In Czech culture, jewellery plays an important role at family celebrations: gold chains and garnet jewellery are given as gifts at weddings, baptisms and on Name Day (Svátek). In the diaspora, jewellery with Czech motifs serves a special purpose: the lion around the neck makes belonging visible – to culture, to family, to home.

Buying a Czech Necklace – What to Look For
If you're looking to buy a Czech necklace, pay attention to material, craftsmanship and chain length. Our crest necklace is made from brass with 18K gold plating – providing a warm gold tone that is waterproof and allergy-friendly. For craftsmanship, check the pendant: the double-tailed lion with crown should be cleanly worked and the relief clearly defined. The chain length of 40 cm + 5 cm extension fits most women comfortably. At d'origine, you order directly from our shop – no middlemen. We ship worldwide: free shipping within Germany, free across Europe on orders over €25, and affordable international shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Australia and beyond.
How Many Czechs Live Abroad?
The Czech diaspora is relatively modest compared to the country's population of roughly 10.8 million, but it has deep historical roots. The largest emigration wave brought Czechs to the United States: approximately 1.5 million Americans claim Czech ancestry, concentrated in Texas (where the town of West hosts the oldest Czech settlement in the US), Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa. In the 19th century, Chicago became home to one of the largest Czech communities outside Bohemia. In Germany, an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 Czech nationals reside – the proximity between Bavaria and Bohemia is reflected in centuries-old cultural and economic ties. Austria, Slovakia and the United Kingdom also host significant Czech communities. A Czech necklace is, for many, a daily sign of that connection – quiet, but unmistakable. At d'origine, we understand this feeling, because that's exactly why we founded the brand: jewellery that makes heritage visible.
